Emergency Shelter

FamilyAid Boston partners with the City of Boston to provide emergency shelter to homeless families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week so that no family has to spend a night on the street.

A small girl.FamilyAid Boston is the only agency in Massachusetts providing 24/7 emergency shelter to homeless families whose incomes exceed the federal poverty limit ($26,508 for a family of 4) to qualify for state shelter but earn too little to afford market-rent housing. We also provide after-hours services for families who need assistance when state shelter offices are closed.

Our social workers conduct an initial assessment and provide crisis intervention for each family. Once families are in shelter, we work with them help to identify and address the problems that led to their becoming homeless. The program's goal is to have families housed or in the process of obtaining housing within 30 days of entering shelter.

Please note that we do not have a shelter on-site at our main office and we do not staff this site outside of normal business hours (Monday-Friday 8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m.). All families needing shelter outside of these hours can reach us through the Mayor's Hotline: 617-635-4500.

Am I Eligible?

To qualify for emergency shelter, families must be homeless, from Boston, and have children under the age of 18. Families also must be over-income or otherwise ineligible for state-funded Emergency Assistance (EA). To access services during normal business hours, call 617-542-7286 X229. On nights, weekends, or at any other time that our offices are closed, families can access the program through the Mayor’s Hotline at 617-635-4500.
