About the Evening - 100 Years of Shelter, Housing, and Hope
Our 100th anniversary celebration will be a joyful evening filled with food, drink, music, and live auction, all honoring two remarkable community members and benefiting Boston's homeless parents and children. Free parking is available on Fish Pier.
Michael Durkin, President and CEO of the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley
FamilyAid Boston proudly honors Michael Durkin with The Community Impact Award. Mr. Durkin has worked for the United Way for more than thirty years and served as CEO and president of the United Way in Denver, Colorado, where he worked with the city’s mayor to launch a ten-year plan to end homelessness. He came to Boston in 2008 and has provided critical leadership on issues of homelessness in the city. In 2015, the United Way partnered with the Massachusetts Housing and Shelter Alliance and the Corporation for Supportive Housing to launch the first-in-the-nation Pay for Success initiative to reduce chronic individual homelessness and worked with the Boston College Center for Innovation to launch the IF Challenge, a prize competition that sought out innovative solutions to ending family homelessness. Mr. Durkin also serves on Mayor Martin J. Walsh’s Task Force on Individual Homelessness.
Adrian Walker, Columnist for The Boston Globe
FamilyAid Boston proudly honors Adrian Walker with The Thomas M. Menino Award for Outstanding Community Service. Mr. Walker began his career at The Miami News and has written for the Boston Globe since 1998. Mr. Walker’s powerful columns on poverty, race, and politics have given voice to people who are often overlooked or misunderstood by society, and his words have inspired many in and around Boston to work for greater social and economic justice.
